New Horizons' Pluto Approach Hyped in Epic Video

Artistic Depiction of Pluto

The National Space Society put together an incredible video preview of the history-making moment. It has the vibe of a movie trailer, complete with epic narration and stunning visuals, and it perfectly captures why space enthusiasts are so psyched about the New Horizons mission.

The video sweeps you through a timeline of the last half century of space exploration using beautiful images of each planet we've explored, starting with Venus in 1962 and ending with Neptune in 1989.

New Horizons will reach Pluto and its moons on July 14, and they will be "the farthest worlds ever to be explored by humankind," the video says.

So far that the sun appears as a faint dot.

  1. This is off subject a bit, but I can't seem to locate any "discussions" on the matter and I'm thinking you may know.

Do you know of any studies, or theories floating around out there related to planetary evolution (evolution of the planets themselves) on a solar system scale?

I've wondered for years if maybe planets, as we see them now, are in various stages of evolution which may explain the existence of rocky planets, gaseous planets, and perhaps even the existence of rings around the gas planets and the Kuyper Belt, etc...

If, maybe gaseous planets are rocky planets in the early stages of evolution, and even dead rocky planets just may be end-stages of this evolutionary progress. For example: Venus and Mars are what Earth is to become, Earth is what Mars and Venus once were and our giants are what all the rocky planets were once like as well.

  2. Yeah, there are some evidence which supports that mars once had earth like conditions and even had life.
Their are also theories that gas giants were rocky planets located far from sun but due to their high gravity they just pulled in all the surrounding gases. As we know all the gas giants have rocky core inside.

NASA scientist also runs simulations on supercomputers which creates the exact conditions of our solar system . these simulations helps scientists in understanding planet evolution.

  3. Those with vision and scientific curiosity should be astounded we have come this" far. Those bereft of soul and concerned only with profit try to slash the budgets. Pity!
